Brexit and The Meconopsis Group
« on: 29 September, 2019, 22:40:35 »
In a month's time there is the real possibility that the UK will no longer be a member of the European Union, which has serious repercussions for the Meconopsis Group.

As from 2020 there will be new EU legislation requiring seed imports from outside the EU to carry a phytosanitory certificate.

This will not affect the 2019 seed exchange as all seed will have been dispatched before the new legislation comes into force. However it does mean that, in subsequent years, it may be financially impossible to receive seed donations from EU countries, and likewise distribute seed in the opposite direction.

If, or when, Brexit goes ahead the changes depend of whether we have a deal or not. If the UK has some sort of customs union with the EU, then the movement of seed may be allowed and all will be fine.  If it doesn't, well you can draw your own conclusion.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but when there is more clarity I'll let you know.

The new regulation are supposed to go into effect on December 14th of this year... We are not entirely sure what it means for us here in China either at them moment, the UK might end up becoming our only market if you indeed do leave the union.
